NYC's next Swap is currently in production and will take place October 7th (and maybe 8th too - a 2 day swap). Be sure your on the mailing list so that you'll receive the announcement. All Swap-O-Rama-Rama's are a bi-product of the collective energy of a community. So please consider joining in by playing a role in the next one. Swap-O-Rama-Rama is looking for DIY'ers, creatives and recyclers of all calibers. Read on for suggestions on how you might participate: Here's how. . .

Open Call

1) The Mass of Free Clothing: Everyone attends with a bag of unwanted clothing to donate to the swap. Collectively an anticipated 10,000 lbs of free clothing is offered to all (and saved from landfill). Participate as a clothing sorter. This volunteer gig involves sorting the incoming clothing into piles: shirts, skirts, hats etc. The perks (first dibs on all the clothes) are great!

2) On Site Sewing Stations: each Swap-O-Rama-Rama features clothing designers, costume makers and hobby sewers who offer on-site knowledge and hands on demos to attendees. Here you'll teach others to modify new/used duds and help them loose their inhibitions about sewing. Participate: This role pays a small stipend. If you like helping and working with others you might dig this hectic but very rewarding role. All materials needed to run this station are provided. You are asked to bring/use your own sewing machine which will be insured by the swap, repairs will be paid for my the swap should anything happen to your machine.

3) DIY Stations: All swaps are different. In the past we've had: on site silk screening, an iron on station and a hand stitch and glue station, to name a few. These reflect the energies of volunteers who make the event what it is. Participate: If your interested in running a DIY station just write in with your ideas. All materials needed to run your station are provided. A stipend may be available as well.

4) Artist Taught Workshops: Each half hour a local artist offers the swap audience a unique modification skill through an in-depth workshop or how-to demo. Participate: This is a great way to share your work with others, teach, and receive exposure to like minded people and media. If you have a special trick or skill that involves transforming used clothing, transforming garbage to wearables, teach a workshop!

5) Fashion Show: Each Swap-O-Rama-Rama has at least one fashion show, often two. One features the work of designers of all calibers who have created recycled works and who were staff at the event. The second is for people who created things during the event and want to show them off. Participate: If you have created recycled wearables bring them before a like minded audience and media. If you'd like to participate in the swap for attendees, there's a sign up sheet at each event.

6) Misc.: Since swaps reflect the local talent of each community they often have other kinds of on-theme contributions such as short films (these usually show an artists work if they're not available or in the area), stand up comedy etc. If you have a like minded performance and want to add it to the swap just send an email. There's also a need for general helpers for set up, room design an MC, etc., I'm open to suggestions so please write with your contributions.
